Posted by Jared Sorry to hear you didn't get Schilling, but it seems as though you have other options. Don't worry too much about the Myers/Dubose transaction - I think Myers will turn into a great pitcher one day, but that day isn't coming soon (next season at the earliest). I like Contreras, and I know Ron does as well based on his projections. If you take away his stats against the Red Sox, his numbers this year aren't horrendous - it just seems like Manny and Co. have his number so far in his career. As for Pettitte, I like him as well, and I don't feel as though Minute Maid Park will hold him back either. Most AL pitchers who move to the NL enjoy quite a lot of success, due to the fact hitters are unfamiliar with them, but also because the National League plays a different style of game which benefits starting pitchers. On the same note, I'm not surprised at all that Roger Clemens is also doing fantastic in Houston - he'll continue his success for the full season. I would set my sights on a Mora for Hernandez deal. Play up Mora's success and see if you can reel Livan in. The key thing to remember is that Mora is one of the most predictable (and successful) 1st half hitters in all of baseball, who proceeds to tank after the All-Star break. Last year was no different, as he hit .352 with an OPS of 1020 in the 1st half, and followed that with a .246/660 OPS in the 2nd half. Bottom line, if you can get Hernandez for Mora, do it. Otherwise, if you're going to deal Manny, get one of the top SPs out there (not Loiaza as his velocity has dipped tremedously this year). Good luck, --Previous Message--

Hey Dave,
Jared
: Hey Jared,
: Thank you for the information and advice!
: Here is what happened: I dropped Myers and
: picked up DuBose (Myers had a QS last start -
: having second thoughts, Dubose went 5 IN/5
: ER, I pulled the trigger probably too soon,
: oh well). I got Ryan Madson (insurance for
: Myers and helps with ERA/Whip when he
: pitches) when Contreras went to minors - is
: this guy the real deal, or is it pitching for
: NYY that is affecting him? Wondering if I
: should hang with him for a while when he come
: back up - today it looks like they want 1 or
: 2 more starts in Triple-A to get his command
: back..
: My Manny for Schill traded was rejected, I
: was offered Ponson and Petitte (really
: Petitte for Manny) and let it go, just did
: not thing Petitte will hold up well in
: Houston's small park.... - just a gut
: feeling...)
: Someone else offered Mag Ordonez for Pettite
: and it went through.
: Currently kicking around either Esteban
: Loaiza for Melvin Mora or Livan Hernandez for
: either Mora or Manny? Mora seems really hot
: now and he is doing great, but I have Carl
: Everett on DL and I really need
: Wins/ERA/Whip/K's. My other pitchers are
: Mulder/Redman/Harden from A's, Cliff Lee -
: Indians, Foulke/Herges - closers,
: Brian Lawrence and Eric DuBose (probably
: would drop him if can get Loaiza or Hernandez
: - I like Hernandez's numbers except wins
: (only 2).
: My team whip is 1.517 - last, ERA is 4.56
: (11th of 14) and K's 11 of 14). Any
: suggestions would be appreciated... Thanks
: again :-)

: Hi Dave,
: Early season pickups are always tough. My
: feeling is always go with your gut, but base
: your decision on some research first. Myers
: has not pitched well so far and may be
: demoted in the short future - his hit rate so
: far is an astronomical 44% (league avg is
: 30), so you know that will come down as he's
: too good of a pitcher. Lawrence isn't
: pitching much better, with a 38 hit%, and a
: horrible 1.3 command (his previous three
: years are 2.3, 2.9, and 2.0). His dominance
: (k ratio) is up to 6.1, but so are his HRs at
: 1.4. If you look at his 2nd half last year,
: his stats seem to be worsening.
: As our sample size is only one month, you
: always risk the chance veteran pitchers will
: bounce back, while at the same time missing
: out on up-and-comers if you don't act quick
: enough. Dubose's stats from last year seemed
: promising, although he had a 25% hit rate.
: His hit rate so far is even lower (20%), so
: one would expect it to rise, along with his
: ERA and WHIP.
: My advice would be to hold on to both for at
: least one more week and see if Myers is sent
: down. If he is and Dubose is still
: available, it fits. If Myers pitches better
: and Lawrence doesn't, then think about
: Lawrence for Dubose.
: As for a Manny-Schilling deal, offer it up.
: ALWAYS take top pitching over top hitting.
: It's much easier to replace/find hitting than
: it is pitching. Good luck.

: I am thinking about dropping Brett Myers to
: pick up Eric DuBose of O's. Also, Brian
: Lawrence is the mix....
: One thought says drop Lawrence for DuBose,
: Lawrence did get a win over Mets last night 5
: runs/5in but his ERA/Whip are killing me...
: and keep Myers. But after next start if not
: improvement, Phillies may send him to
: Triple-A to work out his mechanics. Then I
: have him when he returns to majors later
: on...
: Or drop Myers now, lose him for good, and
: keep Lawrence and wait to see if he can get
: his ERA/Whip straighted out... Padres have it
: going this year offensively...
: What do you guys advise at this point? (Myers
: was a keeper for me this year, and as you can
: see, hate to let him go, only 23, but I am
: ranked about 8th in pitching in a 14 team
: AL/NL league). Leading in hitting so far,
: considering a Manny Ramrez for Curt Schilling
: trade, kinda of chicken to offer it, but
: Schill is a money pitcher, like his character
: better than Manny. But Manny puts up big
: numbers....
: Thanks!
: Dave
