Posted by Jared on 5/1/2004, 7:35 pm, in reply to "Re: Help! Mike Mussina is Killing Me!" You seem to have a great pitching staff which can weather a few bad starts. When (not if) Mussina reverts back to form, your pitching stats will become that much better. Good luck. --Previous Message--
If you can't reserve Mussina, be patient. Mussina is too good of a pitcher to stay in a rut, plus the Yankees offense is starting to wake up this week. My take is 1) don't worry about what place you're in at the end of April; 2) look at individual performances and make moves based on previous histories and solid research.
: Sometimes if a pitcher is struggling, it's best
: to "reserve" him for a start or
: two. This gives you a chance to not get
: "killed" in your stats and allows
: you a chance to see if anything develops.
: For example, maybe this week you might get
: some more news about him... injury problem,
: personal problem, etc.
: If he pitches well, you can put him back in
: the lineup. If he pitches poorly, keep him
: out.
: Don't outright release him, though. Wait
: until he improves a little and then test the
: trade winds.
: Also, you've got a solid staff. I don't
: think it would be hurt but holding out one
: starter or trading him down the line.
: Good luck!

: I'm in a keeper league and have had Mike
: Mussina for years. I'm right in the middle
: of the fight for 1st. Normally, I wouldn't
: make moves this early in the season. I hear
: that Mussina's velocity is down dramatically
: (injured??). I generally focus on velocity
: and K/BB ratio when choosing pitchers. My
: other starters are Vazquez, Millwood,
: Padilla, Sheets, Eaton and Beckett. I've
: worked really hard to build a good staff.
: Even though I've got a 'sentimental'
: attachment to Mussina, I don't want to see
: him ruin my pitching. Is it time for me to
: release him? Surprisingly, I've been able to
: generate no trade interest! HELP!
