Posted by John Jones on 9/17/2003, 4:34 am Thankyou Madelene for your gift of this bulletin board. Those of us who have been able to share memories and info about the Auckland Islands have benefitted immensely thru Members3, born Nov. 2000. "Something I always wanted to do" she told me.

Madelene has left another magnificent contribution through her writings in her book "Wake of the Invercauld" in which she so graphically tells of how she found out about Robert Holding's survival year (1863) and discovery of his written memoirs, all included in that book (click on 'aucklands' at top of this page to read more - copies are still available).
She was also an acknowledged reference source for the book "Enderby Settlement Diaries"- word for word print of the writings of administrators of the ill-fated settlement attempt in the years 1849-52 (Hardwicke Village, Port Ross, Auckland Islands). The hardships and despairs of the hopeful families (from England, vessels Samuel Enderby, Brisk, and Fancy) can well be imagined thru the final words of one of the diarists, Wm Mackworth, as he left on 4 Aug 1852 "The satisfaction I feel at this moment is beyond description. My miserable life at Port Ross will never be forgotten".
