Posted by john jones This bulletin board was initiated by Madelene Allen - who has over the past decade become totally fascinated by all things re the Aucklands - ever since she learned in the early 90's that her gr grandfather, Robert Holding, was shipwrecked there in 1863. She has made three journeys down there from her home in Canada, has written books and articles - has recently been researching the Enderby Settlement (Hardwicke) with view to the writing of another book. Sadly, and of great shock to those of us who have been closely asociated with her over recent years, Madelene died peacefully at her home in Canada, on 13th of last month (August). John, re your forbears - the publication "Enderby Settlement Diaries" includes info about James Bromley - an original settler, described as a Butcher, former sailor and farmer. There is record of his travelling to Dunedin to purchase sheep for the village (4 Nov 1850) and his return 11 Dec with diary note "Bromley brought back a wife" - a very quick and short romance! Can tell you more - e-mail me js.jones@paradise.net.nz if you wish. Regards John Jones.
