Posted by Dave Stone A book was written about the wreck but the title escapes me, although my brother has a copy which we obtained from New Zealand. It details the circumstances of the wreck and shows a picture of the gold inscribed watch presented to James on his return to Ireland (as well as having the island named after him), in recognition of the fact that he kept up the morale of the other survivors until rescued some 18 months after the wreck. That watch was in my grandmothers possession for many years until, not knowing mine and my late mothers interest in the history, she GAVE IT AWAY to someone in the family but unknown to me. Lord knows where it is now. When I was 12 and a member of the Sea Cadet Corps, I had a letter published in the Navy News on this very subject. Nine tons of gold bullion went down in the wreck and remains there to this day. The figures may be different now but, when I was looking into it at 12 years old, there had been 17 attempts to locate/salvage the wreck at a cost of another 29 lives! Childhood ambition: Locate and salvage Uncle`s gold!!!
