Hi, I am also a descendant of Joseph and Mary Jewell. Their daughter, Mary Constance Jewell, was my grandmother's mother.
My grandmother, May Corrine Phillips, will be 90 in July 2008. She is as industrious as Mary was, is well and still lives in her own home. We live in Sydney Australia and have a copy of very well written and descriptive letter Joseph sent to his father telling their sorry tale and subsequent rescue. It does, in part, shed a different light on how they survived the actual shipwreck.
Mary Jewell was an extremely capable and strong woman considering her size and no doubt her seamstress skills helped clothe the other all male survivors. I am not sure why they were travelling to England. To live or just visit their families? Any info would be appreciated as would hearing from any distant relatives. Cheers, Kerrie
