hi phillip,
my name is greg sharp and i research shipwrecks, manila galleons, piratical seizures and the treasures of mexico and incan peru!i saw an old article in an old harper's magazine about the wreck of the general grant and it illude to the masts snapping off as the ship ground into a seacave towering above the deck and some other horrific details and it stuck in my mind for years!!once while waiting to get on the pirates of the caribbean ride at disneyland ,years ago i came upon a book selling at a little antique shop that they once had near the ride!it was a book from the period with the complete story of the voyage and the subsequent sinking and the survivors stories..it was selling for a mere $58 dollars;and although i recognised it's signifigance even then i didn't purchase it at that time!when i made another trip to disneyland; the antique shop was gone as well as a wonderful scent and perfume bazaar that was next to it,with thoussands of dollars worth of exotic essential oils, attar of roses,bergamot,frangiphani,ulang-ulang and musks, ambergris and others in large 5 gallon glass decanters... both tresures gone!!it was beautifully bound with gold embossed cover!!very jules verne-esque!!i suppose it was from walt disney's personnal collections and it's importance wasn't realized by those selling it ,i would guess ,either!!the ship itself was hastily constructed in the closing of the civil war in america at boston from unseasoned "green" wood!i know it's particulars of construction if you are interested!it is also mentioned in the movie "around the world in 80 days" with cantinflas and david niven as being in the orient at the time of their race around the world!!strange isn't that!!<eldoradoreefgold@yahoo.com>greg sharp/california
