hi everyone,
i have an issue i'd like to discuss and it would be great to read your thoughts on this topic.
Lastnight my husband and i, along with and his family (about 20 ppl) all went out for dinner as we had a few quests from overseas. We were at a lovely place and all of the family are mixed with men and women and a few kids.
When we were all directed to our table it surprised me that the men sat down right away and did not even think of were the women would sit - my husband and i recently married and there were three other couples. So what happened (as per usual) is that the men sat on one end of the table and the women sat on the other end.
this really had me frustrated because we were all a group who could have any type of conversations together. There was an age difference from the youngest adult being 21 all the way through to 63. We have been out several times and never had this segregation before.
I was born in australia however both my parents are full assyrian from Iraq, i grew up speaking assyrian first and then english but i've grown up with all the all the assyrian cultres and habits and i am proud of my heritage.
My question is... why cant us assyrians ever learn that we are living in the 21st Century and that women CAN eat and drink together with men and they CAN have intellectual conversations with men also.
My sister in law who has 3 children told me that this is the way of our traditions - that the men speak boy stuff and the women speak girl stuff. my husbands family are all modernised and are well educated.. so why do they continue to treat women differently....?????
my apologies on the long message but i'd love to hear opinions from mens point of view along with the women... does anyone feel the same as me??
Thanks!
