Two words for you: Think small. We're not going to be able to unite with our neighbors directly to the north, but we have a chance at nations on other continents? Not a chance. And did I actually see allusions to uniting with Afghanistan & France in there? We'd have a better shot uniting with Middle Earth, Narnia, & other lands that don't actually exist.
