I urge you and everyone else to visit the site: unitednorthamerica.org.
I recently discovered this site which is loaded with facts and tons of discussion that puts our site here to shame. There are a load of ideas being thrown around there, and the general sentiment seems to be leaning towards the "absorption" and "annexation" of Canada into the U.S. (making the providences of Canada into states). I was quite surprised when I found the site and saw numerous Canadians admitting that they were the "weaker" country and supporting their annexation into the U.S. This concept of absorption brings up a host of other issues that I dont wish to address at this time and in this post. There is just too much to discuss and analyze.
In response to your general question of whether this can happen or not, the answer is a definite Yes. This concept of political unification of Canada and America is definitely possible. Maybe contrary to people's beliefs, this whole site and and theory is really not a joke. Charles and I, being high schoolers at the time, have always been pseudo-serious and admittedly somewhat tounge-in-cheek when presenting the americanadian theory. We have always talked about hockey, mounties, beer, etc . . in good fun. Underlying this fun, however, is a very valid, serious thought: that the U.S. and Canada can merge to form one country. Charles and I have been trying for a long time to update the site in order to bring out these elements of seriousness and be more analytical. It's just that we haven't had a lot of time to do so- due to college and whatever else. So while the site and the theory have always been fun and will continue to be fun, I would like everyone to realize that this is a real, legitimate ideology.
We are not the only ones thinking about this. There are a number of online movements towards integration as well as studies done as to what people think about this potential merger. In fact I currently have a book in my possesion that discusses the potential for North American integration. Due to our increasingly dependent economies and competition with the E.U., many think that this integration is simply inevitable. In addition, there is a good portion of people who, when polled about the idea, supported the merger. So again I urge people to take a look at the site I listed above and continue to think seriously about the idea.
