Double 45's bearing edges have a very strong attack and because of the minimal head contact are prone to ringing. But as been noted, you can still tune them nicely if you take the time. Vintage bearing edges are usually 45 degrees with a rounded over edge to the outside. This muffles some of the ringing and gives a more traditional drum sound. Both are good sounding, just a little different. The worst bearing edge is a 45% outside cut. This is usually done on cheap drums. The bearing edge is too close to the shoulder of the drum head and your tuning sometimes gets funny because of the dynamics of the head being stretched very close to the shoulder. They still work but you don't get an even change of tone all the time as you tune the head up or down.
