What kind of stain are you using? I used a water-based stain/dye gel and got great results. Mine was a honey-amber. Make sure you have sanded properly before you apply the stain. I applied mine with a foam brush and it came out very evenly. You should be able to apply multiple coats for darker finishes. Hope this helps!
