i ordered a snare from john not to long ago and i am going to stain it myself, but there is a problem. I tried staining a piece of maple for practice and it came out very blotchy. I had been to many forums on this matter before i stained it so i knew that it would be blotchy. So i went to a wood finishing place and i asked them if they could help me out with staining maple. The guy gave me advice to keep it from blotching, but it still came out blotchy. I am going to experiment, but i definately have a problem. Should i ask a custom drum builder? I went to the canopus drum website and their maple drum stains are flawless, so i know that a non-blotchy stain is posible. Although i have talked to many non-drum finishers, i would like advise from a drummer who has experience. Oh, and if it helps i am staining my maple snare a dark walnut brown.
