be careful with getting toms that are too short because you run the risk of losing your bottom end. i think you can achieve the sound youre looking for with 6x10 and a 7x12 anything much shorter than that will really lose meatiness. personally i like the sound of a good 10x12 rack tom but the depth just isnt very versitile.
you could always start out by building you 10" tom since that one would be the least expensive.
worst case senario you could get a butt and strainer and end up with a 5x10 aux snare.
John's prices make it affordable to experiment.
