Here is my kit in it's most recent iteration. All the toms are now power depth. I have added two acrylic shelled snares, a 13x5.5 spaun vented and a 14x5.5 Custom acrylic with trick throw.
And from the front:
Note: power toms (like 12x12, 14x14) are cool, but they are limited compared to standard depths. They really are pillowy (a lot of air mass to move) so they don't quite punch as well. You can compensate a little, by using a ps/3 on top, and a cs dot on bottom to focus a bit.
Despite the "look" of power toms, I am sticking with the standard depth shells.
Power tom issues: (negatives)
- Clearance: taller shells sit higher
- More volume of air to move: the drum loses attack and feels pillowy
- Less perceived depth- not just volume, but distance between drumheads. The deeper drums don't sound as deep as standard toms.
I made a failed attempt at staining (as a test) the 14x14 tom with Minwax red mahogany. The stain did not take well, and it looks like a log that has been rolled in liquid manure. To add insult to injury, every scratch and flaw became highly visible.
I am trying blue sapphire trans-tint this week. Also, I have sold my DW 5000ad3, because IMO, the Gibraltar direct-drive pedals are much more accurate and deliver more power than chain drive pedals. I am sold on solid link.
