Ours are plated. When I first started the company I imported some solid brass hoops. I conducted an experiment by suspending one next to a regular 2.3 hoop, both on single strings. The solid brass sounded like a triangle, very nice tone, the 2.3 was fairly blunt sounding. So my opinion is that they brighten up the sound or make a drum more lively. We can get them from a supplier. The are formed like 2.3 hoops, not cast. Available in 10 hole configuration brass finish only for 14" snare $150 a pair. Contact me jriolo@efn.org if interested.
