To help others that have e-mailed me about my Riolo kit:
The 20" floor tom is made from a shell normally designated as a kick drum. It's:
86e 18x20 8-Ply Maple Bass Shell $110.00
As stated before, 20" drumheads and hoops available now are made for kick drums only. A kick drum head has a wide rim that will not work with a tom counterhoop. This is a blessing in disguise for two reasons.
1). This tom is not a unitasker, as intended all along, it can be easily converted into a kick just by inserting a pair of the old style clamp-in spurs.
2) Due to it's mass and depth, modern kick drum heads like the powerstroke 3 on top and bottom will help give the drum much better focu than a Gene-Krupa style floor tom or a gong drum.
3) It can also be converted to a gong drum, just put an Evans mesh head on the bottom, and use the clamps as mounts.
Contrary to some of the ignorant (negative)things I have seen written about it on the web, I cansidered all of this before I built it. I like to consider myself at least a *little* better of a thinker and a planner than some 15-year-old troll on a drum forum. Additionally, Keller shells have been in wide use all over the world for decades. They do sound 100% as good as any brand name shell. They also make ash, bubinga, walnut and anything else people want in lots of 1,000 from the factory. Do not let anyone try to convince you that Keller is anything other than the best. Hearing is believing! Coming from me, who has played Sonor delite and designer, I can honestly say that those drums do nothing that Keller cannot.
Good luck to all of you on your build, I know Mr. Riolo appreciates the buisiness. Photos of my "final assembly" will be posted right after my lugs arrive for the 20" FTOD. My kit will also appear (hopefully) in the Saluda cymbals gallery, and of course on my site www.synthetictubs.com. I will be making an audio narrative of the build. I hope to get some decent mics to record it as well.
