Originally, I drafted plans for a "power tom" kit, but quashed it. I remember the brief fling that the industry had with square drum sizes. The advantages were mostly looks, but they also boomed out for arena rock.
Unfortunately, there were lots of disadvanatges:
-Drumheads too far apart, very limited tuning range
-Drums sound "one note"
-Drums were boomy
- Compared to fast/standard size: they lack comparative punch and definition.
-Clearance issues arise. I hated having toms 5 feet in the air to clear a 24" kick.
Again, they look cool and sound decent (provided you can live with the single note/boomy/less than defined sound.
