I just bought a custom vented snare drum from a company out of Boston. It's a 5.5x14 10-ply maple drum with two 1" vents in it. Let me tell you, when it's tuned just right it CRACKS. It's loud, unique, it has a lot of body... it's a great drum. I also built a snare drum (with Riolo parts) that was 6.5x14 with two 1/8" air holes in it. It's sensative and has to be tampered with a lot to get it to sound just right. But it has a lot pop and a lot of body. It's a great drum.
