I tune the batter just until it doesn't wrinkle and tighten the resonant head just a bit (max. a quarter turn)above that. Playing style also affects the sound. To get the max out of the drum I release the beater directly after hitting. This is something I learned in those days I played a 28(!) kick with full heads and no muffling - that drum wouldn't have it any other way. Finally, sound is in the ears of the beholder. In my opinion a bassdrum should produce low frequency (for bass) and high frequency for attack. For instance: high quality bassdrum mics are engineered to reproduce exactly that. Many times the term "punch" is associated with midrange frequency - something I feel definitely not is desired from a BD. On the other hand if "punch" means "gut shaking"... hey... then we're talking :-)

Hey,
Sorry for checking in late.
I've been through a lot of different heads and for the time being I've settled with an Evans EQ2 clear batter and a Remo Fiberskyn up front (mostly for the looks). As I employ an internally mounted Shure B-52, I kept my DW muffling pillow as well. If Evans made white resonant heads for their EQ series I would probably try that with no further muffling.
