listen to the Moby Dick drum solo on how the "how the west was won" live Zepplin album. Bonham does some really interesting things with the throw-off.
the throw-off in the off position can really atmospherize your snare for songs of a darker nature, or anywhere that a snare might be too poppy or a tom might too low. the throw-off is the middle ground. i also use mine for tuning and everytime i finish playing i throw mine off to take away stress from the shell and the snares.
it also works good to bust people who play your kit while you're away because the guitarist never throw it back off after he has finshed bang the crap out of you drums
