I think the throwoff is a great invention. You use it to create another tom, almost a timbale sound, which works great with an eight-inch tom for latin accents. You can also tune the snares to create the kind of sound you need for certain styles of music. Very tight "chokes" the drum, a little less and you have a tight buzz, and tune all the way to loose for a "fuzz-tone" sound. They all sound completely different across the room in any venue.
