I am not sure of the exact function of the air holes on drums. I have heard many conflicting reasons, but nothing seems concrete to me. Can someone tell me what the function is and what problems could arise, if any, from blocking them with mic chords or other things obstructing air flow. Could this cause tuning problems? I am running internal mics and use these holes for my chords to come out. The sound man says by doing so, it is bad for "mic"ing, but hasn't been able to tell me exactly what is bad. Just that it sounds better with the mic chords not blocking the hole. I can't tell any difference. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
