You got a great deal on that machine -
the best response I can give is to read the operators manual. If you don't have a copy with the machine, you can download from the Garret site.
It will tell you what those sounds mean in terms of metal under the ground (low-tone sounds will be iron/steel - mid-tone sounds anything from nickel through aluminum - gold is found in this range - and higher tone sounds copper, bronze, brass & silver.
There are also operating videos, and a good start is the one Joe has already linked you to.
