Hey MJ. I'm also new to detecting, but I did a lot of reading on this site and others and eventually settled on a detector that I felt I would enjoy. Hobby Wholesale on Gateway Blvd in Edmonton carries several detectors. From very baisc ones to professional ones.
As for tools. I picked up a small spade, and hobby wholesale has a pouch, probe (screwdriver basically) and a little digging tool as a combo for about $25
