Hi Linda, welcome to the forum.
Most public places are ok to metal detect, parks, beaches etc. I suggest taking your new detector to a school, there are usually lots of targets, trash, coins and assorted goodies. This will let you get used to the sounds of your machine and practice recovering targets.
What detector did you buy?
