I wanted to mention a couple things about detectors and some of the 'features' that make for a 'Good Hunting' machine.. At least in 'My Opinion', so take it for what it's worth.
Firstly, I like to mention that IF you put in the time and effort (detecting time and research) you can and will pay off your detector ('EASILY) in one 'Alberta Detecting Season'! With everything that I've found this season, I could EASILY pay for a $1700.00 E-Trac AND my ATPRO. So I would keep this in mind when you decide to purchase a detector and certainly one that might cost a couple of hundred more than what you are presently looking at.. As an example, my CLAD COINS alone for this year should EASILY (haven't counted it yet) pay for my ATPRO.
Detector Specifics and things I find 'critical' when deciding to purchase a detector...
-Superior Depth:
-Proportional Audio:
-Tone Roll Audio: (may be specific to Garrett?)
-Excellent Shielding:
-Frequency adjustments for Electrical Disturbance
-Electronic Pinpointing feature
-KHz frequency Multiple, or at least in the 14-20 range
-Water-Proof or VERY water Resistant
-Good or Exceptional Ferrous Identification: (preferably an 'Iron Audio Button')
-Minimum VDI range of 0 to 99
-Ability to 'Notch Out' segments/blocks for disc.
-Automatic AND 'Manual' ground balance
-Double "D" (DD) coil
-Good to Exceptional Battery Life
-GREAT WARRANTY (transferable) and Excellent Customer Service from the Manufacturer.
These are basically 'some' of the 'things' that I would 'consider' when purchasing a Detector (any detector). ALL of these features CAN be found on the GARRETT ATPRO. You can find most or all of these features on some other detectors, but I can't think of a single detector that has this many options for a mere $500.00 AND is 'SUBMERSIBLE' and yet, can STILL be considered a 'Turn on and Go' detector! Am I biased? Sure,... But the Proof is in the Puddin' and I've found a LOT of nice 'puddin'
**Either way, if you can find a detector with enough 'Features' it will give you an 'Auditory Map' of what's in front of you when you swing that coil and as a result, you're going to dig FAR, FAR less trash and at the same time identify 'good targets' with a great deal of confidence.**
Cheers,
