I have a XLT that I bought late last summer. The dfx is a dual frequentcy machine . Both machine have a slight learning curve. I like my detector and now just learning to change some of the settings. DFX may be a bit more complicated. I think that now I would be able to learn the DFX after using the XLT. I have the Whites Beachunter ID, which is a Water version of the DFX as it is also duel frequency. I've used the BHID detecting soccer fields, baseball fields and beaches with good results finding silver rings, gold rings and lots of clad. A good thing is the battery case is interchangable for the two of them. I would definetly recommend the XLT-E as a good choice also less expensive. You can check the XLT classroom forum and I think DFX also has a classroom forum. This just my opinion.
