Don't get me wrong. The 1280X is a decent machine. I have one myself but it is a water machine. Why would you purchase that type of detector, let alone two when it looks like you only hunt on land. They are very heavy. I have problems swinging mine for long periods, a 11 year old will play out just a quick. There are better choices for the beginner.
One tip that will help some is to raise the coil above your target as you criss cross. It will narrow your target sound and give you a closer location. Good luck this summer
