My son and a started metal detecting as a weekend hobby last year. We each have a fisher 1280X, I have a large coil and he has a small coil (easier for him to handle cause he is only 11). Last year we were very successful at finding burried trash (nails, wire, you name it) doesn't matter much to the kid though whatever he digs up is pure treasure to him, he would metal detect 24 a day if we let him. We also dug up three pennies, one from the 1940's but that was our season. As we are getting ready for another summer our biggest challenge last year was where to start to dig once our detectors beeped a target. It seemed we were always digging to the left, or to the right, or anywhere 4 - 6 inches from where we ultimately found the target. This was making a lot of extra digging. Does anyone have any advice or can point to an article or two on how to pinpoint properly ??
