The Garrett Ace 250 offers alot of features for the money, a very good, fun first detector.
I also like the Tesoros, very good basic detectors with a life time warranty. If youre going to be hunting old sites, the Tesoros are hard to beat when hunting amongst alot of trash (nails etc) The very modestly priced Compadre is one of the best detectors made for detecting trashy sites. It looks too simple to be effective but it works amazingly well, everyone should own one 
With only one knob, you dont need to worry about detector settings, meters etc, just turn it on, set the discrimination level, beep-dig.
As far as old schools go, if you are talking about schools that are still schools then its usually fine to detect them. If you are talking about old one room schools, these are on private property and you must obtain permission prior to detecting them
