Hi, Mike. Welcome to the hobby.
I have owned Tesoro products since '85 and have only once needed to get service on my 20 year old Mayan, which by the way, they have an excellent service reputation. I currently own the Tejon which is one of their higher end machines, but they have good selection at every pricing point for almost any hunting preference (water, coin shooting, relics, etc...)
Having said that, a lot of my hunting buddies have Garrett Ace 250's and they really like them and they are priced right for someone entering the hobby.
If you are in the Calgary area, we have a club meeting next Tuesday, January 8th starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Brentwood Shopping Centre NW Co-Op store auditorium (basement with access inside the Co Op grocery store). Each month a different member of the Calgary Metal Detecting Club gives a brief demo of their machine and on the coffee break you have a chance to handle it.
If you can't make the next meeting, we normally hold them the first Tuesday of each month. As a benefit to joining the club we hold organized club hunts periodically over the summer and give prizes to those that display their best finds at each monthly meeting. If you aren't in the Calgary area, search out and join a club in your local region as there is a lot anyone can learn from other treasure hunters.
In terms of where not to hunt... National Parks and designated historic sites are off limits. School yards and most public lands are acceptable hunting grounds. Private land should only be hunted with the owners permission.
Hope this helps...
Regards,
James (Calgary)
