Post office shipping is expensive! If you've got more than a suitcase worth of stuff to ship, say trunk size or larger, then you'll want to contact a shipping company. They'll aggregate your gear with other folks and the total costs will be much, much lower, though it will take several weeks/months.
I have a lot about this in the full site, but you should google or yellow page a shipping company and check out their web site. Most moving companies have deals with shippers and you can usually work through a local dealer if you're in the middle of a land-locked area.
