We shipped about 20 boxes of books in cardboard boxes and nothing was the least bit damp or wet. Going through the Panama Canal or somesuch from California to Ireland there was enough moisture in the container to swell and cause problems with two old wooden chairs. Yet, the books in the cardboard boxes were totally unaffected. So, my own experience is that cardboard did just fine.
