Hi Dave,
This is a very delayed response. Sorry.
I'm glad to hear others are moving too in these uncertain economic times. Frankly I'd rather move with the toddler than all the animals. We have an elderly cat who will probably move with us and even that is a daunting idea.
I have some interviews lined up. So we will see how it goes.
Best of luck to you and your wife!
Geri

: Geri,
:
: Bit late jumping in here. Happy May day to
: all. My wife and I will be moving back to
: Ireland this October. I've been in America
: since 93. We met when I lived in Galway.
: Anyway I'll be 39 in a few weeks and Aine in
: a few months. Despite all the doom and
: gloom we hear from back home and indeed
: around the world it's going to be fantastic.
: It a big undertaking, we don't have children
: however we're bringing a very large dog and
: two cats. Not worried, everything is going
: to be grand as it will for you and the
: family.
:
: Good luck to ya.
:
: PS: RIP Gerry Ryan

: Hi Pat and Scott,
:
: Thanks so much for the advice and
: encouragement. Pat, I am encouaraged that
: you are doing this with three school-age
: children! I like the idea of the one year
: lease.
:
: Will keep you updated on our progress.
: Thanks,
: Geri

: When we moved, I was 42 and our oldest was
: 8.
: It was a built in mid-life crisis.
:
: Some crisis! Nearly 18 years later, I can
: categorically state it was the second best
: move of my life, the best being heading down
: the aisle with an Irish lass.
:
: Go on, go on! Give it a whirl.

:
: I am an (almost )41 year old moving back
: home to Ireland after 23 years(20 here in
: NY).I have a Husband and 3 kids,15,14 and
: 8.I try to think "one day at a
: time"for all the annoying little things
: to get used to again(like how long it takes
: for some things done),but I really think in
: the long term it's going to be better for
: us.ALL our family are back there. We chose to
: live in Galway about 3 hours from
: everyone,and thats perfect.
: On the renting front...I am a Realtor.I
: intend listing my house with my office. We're
: gonna give a one year lease(that way if we
: want to put it on the market(depending how
: well we all settle back in Ireland)we should
: have no problem getting them out.So after
: the year lease is up ,it automatically
: becomes a month to month lease.you only have
: to give them a months notice after that
: "technically".
: To protect yourselves you have the one
: months rent in advance in case of any
: damage. Also when you use a Realtor they
: "should" be screening the
: renters. So unless they are total
: barbarians.....you should'nt have too much
: trouble... tell them you have family nearby
: that will be checking in now and then
: maybe. Some wear and tear is to be
: expected, shouldn't be more than a lick of
: paint and a good clean after the
: year...."Good Luck to us all"What
: are we thinking at our age...ha ha 40s not
: old ......
: Its exiting!

: Our 4 year old started school here at Junior
: Infants so this was the only school system
: she knew, other than some Montessori in the
: states. No problems at all to report, nor
: even with her 8 year old sister who started
: in 3rd class after 1st and 2nd grade in the
: states. She was behind in her Irish for
: about a year, but then caught up.

: Hi Scott,
:
: Thanks for the reasurance. As it is, we are
: late starters and have a two year old. So I
: guess she wouldn't have too much trouble
: adjusting. She has plenaty of cousins to
: play with at home.

: It doesn't look like anyone is going to
: answer
: your question with experience of overseas
: house renting. But, as with all rental
: properties, it all depends on your tenants.
: There are those who are heavenly and those
: who come from, shall we say, down under.
: (You know... Australians...)
:
: But, the other half of your question is
: easy. There are thousands of people who have
: moved back to Ireland in their forties. The
: biggest problem for this age bracket is
: their kids who have to adjust to school not
: as young kids growing up in a system, but as
: teens.
:
: After a bit of worry and dislocation, the
: kids almost always make their own way. Like
: adults, some love it, some take a while to
: adjust. Read the pages in the free site or
: full site about Schools, check out some
: links, the teens can facebook their Irish
: peers and get some idea.
:
: Remember, you have to be here three years
: and paying taxes in the EU before the kids
: qualify for the exemption from paying
: tuition for college. Though how long this
: will last is anyone's guess. It was due to
: go this year, but pollitical horse trading
: saved it for a bit.
:
: But, the Irish government is in such
: financial trouble, I'd expect it won't be
: around all that longer.

: Hi,
:
: Has anyone moved to Ireland and rented their
: US residence during that time? I have heard
: that renting out results in devaluation of
: your property. Has anyone had this
: experience?
:
: Thanks,
: Geri
:
: P.S. Also wondering if anyone has moved home
: in their 40's. Looking for some hope that it
: is possible!
:
:
:
:
: I made the move, on my own, when I was
: 54--that was over eight years ago and I've
: never regreted it. I rented my house out,
: with no problem, for almost two years until
: I decided to buy here, but times were
: different then when .
: However, age is my least consideration when
: I plan to do something. After all, at this
: given moment, you're as young as you'll be
: for the rest of your life!
