For absolutely required medical treatment, once you're in the hospital the treatment is the same - private insurance or public.
But, if you want to consult a specialist, get an MRI scan, and start the process for any type of "elective" process, then you cut months of waiting by not having to wait for a public clinic.
A recent example: my daughter's best friend has back problems that were crippling her. She had no private health insurance and had to wait two months for an appointment with a specialist then another month for the scan. My daughter, with a similar problem, saw the specialist and then had her scan within a week.
The universal agreement among all experts is that if you can afford it, you absolutely definitely want private health insurance under the current setup of the irish health system.

: Hi
: I am just back from a couple of weeks in
: Ireland. We are moving over there soon and I
: am wondering what the value of buying VHI or
: any private insurance is. While there my
: brother (who lives and works in Ireland) was
: in hospital after a heart attack. He had two
: stents put in and is doing great. He had no
: VHI or any private insurance. Two other men
: in his ward did have VHI, and we cannot see
: how the treatment they received was any
: different from his. Other than they will
: cover the E75/day hospital fee.
: I know I must be missing something. What is
: the advantage of having private insurance?
: Thanks
