Oh I agree, I won't be caught without a TV license, that's for sure, BUT I might just be caught without a TV-there's an idea we just might get used to. Thank you for all the replies.

: It sounds ridiculous, but if you have a TV get
: it. It's worth the €160 not to get a €750
: fine. Plus they'll take it monthly by direct
: debit, it works out to 13.33/month and much
: easier.

: Oh that is funny, to spy them out at your
: own
: house while you are not home....I think I
: understand now. I was trying to figure out
: how we are able to just plug in the TV here
: in the US, and only use our personal games
: and dvd's and I just realized, (with the
: help of your post) it is because we are so
: rural, that we do not get any channels or
: reception at all-so we don't bother to pay
: for any cable or extra channels or any basic
: (PBS) either for that matter. So, to sum it
: up, no TV at all in the house is the only
: way to get out of paying the annual license
: fee. We will be moving over to Co.Cork in
: Jan. so just getting all the little details
: covered. Thank you for your input!

:
: Yes, you must purchase a license (at the
: post office). You don't have a choice to
: "get" the station..it's like PBS
: here in the States- only there's no pledge
: drives etc. even if you don't watch TV you
: must get it.
:
: We went w/o it for a while intitially, but
: did notice two men on several occasions
: coming to our door to check (while we just
: happened to be driving past our house when
: they were spotted!).. I'd get it asap since
: they do show up!

: So, let me get this straight...... if I own
: a
: TV I must purchase a license? What if I am
: not getting the public stations at all, and
: only using the T.V. to view movies/dvds or
: just to play video games? Am I still
: required to obtain a license just for the
: ownership of the TV?
:
: I am unclear exactly what the license is
: for: owning a TV or the use of the
: broadcasting channels?
:
: Thank you very much for clearing this one up
: for me.

: On the subject if TV licenses, anyone with a
: TV is required to have one (be happy it's
: not the UK, they're taxing streaming TV on
: computers now too). The license costs
: 160euro/year or if the inspectors come by
: and you dont have one you get a 750euro
: fine! We found that out the hard way.

: My advice is to keep your checking account
: from your non-Irish bank for a while.
:
: First, I just sent out a newsletter warning
: that you should have savings in some
: non-Irish bank if possible because the
: possibility is real of a run on the Irish
: banks. Unlikely at this point, but still
: definitely a possibility and the best
: strategy is simply NOT to put all your eggs
: in one basket.
:
: Second, you will probably find that you need
: to make a few payments in the country you
: just left. It's easy to just write a
: personal check without the hassle of
: converting to euros, reconverting to dollars
: or yen and paying bank fees on every step.
:
: Third, you've got a ready built hedge
: against a fall in the Euro. If you think the
: dollar or yen will get stronger, then
: without fancy brokers, you've already got a
: play. I'm no money man, but we moved to
: Ireland when the dollar was very, very low
: and the Irish pound (back then) was very,
: very high. We knew the punt would fall,
: which it did spectacularly along with the
: overpriced English pound back in 1992. We
: had brought in only enough money to get by
: and we held off on bringing over the rest
: till after the dust had settled.
:
: Fourth, your credit card is probably still
: set up in the old currency and it's so much
: easier to pay it in the same currency
: without having to worry about commissions,
: rate changes and whether you'll get stung
: for a big card fee because the exchange rate
: was off by a few cents on the day you paid
: the bill. That is, you think you're paying
: the thing off and you come up 50 cents short
: and thereby become eligible for finance
: charges.

: You can get a TV license no questions asked.
: I
: think it was around €180 but I'm not sure.
:
: Just for the record, they absolutely DO come
: to your house and ask to see the license.
: We've been here 4+ yrs and I've been asked
: THREE times and I've always had it up to
: date.
