Hm. An interesting workaround, Dave. What is a TV license? Is everyone required to have one? Can you get one with no official proof of residence?

: Hi John
:
: We moved to Ireland about 3 months ago from
: South Africa.
:
: We found that opening a bank account was
: pretty painful - they want some proof of
: your residence like a utility bill or
: government correspondence addressed to your
: residence.
:
: Thanks to some great advice that we picked
: up on this site, we ended up popping down to
: the post office and getting a tv licence
: with our address on it (no questions asked).
: We then showed the TV licence when applying
: for our PPS numbers. The official letter for
: the PPS arrived 3 days later and we were
: able to use that letter to open the bank
: account.

: My impending move approaches. I'm trying to
: get over there by Nov 15 (I have a flight
: voucher that expires then), and I have a few
: apartments in Galway that I'm about to close
: the deal on. I'm looking for advice on
: banking though. What are the pros/cons of
: keeping my American bank account instead of
: opening an Irish one? I'm looking to stay
: here only a year, but if it's relatively
: easy to open an Irish bank account, I'll do
: that. Thoughts? Thanks!
