The decision on grade placement is made between schools and parents within general guidelines. Except in exceptional circumstances, your child will probably not be turned down for a place in secondary school based on a couple of months difference in birthday.
By the time they graduate, Irish students are often up to two years difference in age. One reason for this is that some students skip transition year (4th year of high school) which is generally optional but highly recommended.

: We are planning to move to Ireland from the
: U.S. in about 9 months. We have a son who is
: in 7th grade, he just turned 12, Sept 30th.
: I see in the most Irish web sites that
: children start secondary school at 13. Is
: there a particular cut off date for when
: they turn 13 (e.g. on or before Sept 1st)?
: Did anyone have a young teen move to
: Ireland? How well did they adjust? We will
: be moving to a small village in Clare.
: Thanks
