LK, all good points.
I have no doubt now that it is no little expense to live in Ireland. My thinking would be more towards buying a little something as soon as I found it over there, and hopefully have most of the cost. But, even so, at 51 I am no where near ready to live off my 401k, but do need work. I'm aware of the legal difference, also have found that Ireland/UK don't have paralegal positions like the one I have but look at it more as a specialized secretary, meaning much less pay then here. All in all, I"m getting less to think its possible then more. I would live in Leitrim, which is far less expensive no doubt then you near dubliin. I live 30 minutes from the Chicago loop in a north suburb; so, you know I live in fast life madness. This is not at all what I want. I've gone to more shows, concerts, museums clubs in my life need no more of that. A night now and then in a city area would be good enough from me. Of course, just like here there would be more jobs in dublin vicinity then in the country. I'm going over in February will get a better sense from cousins on whether I could get a job. Doesn't need to be high paying if I live a simpler life without a mortgage. Thanks all, night.

: Also Patricia, where are you moving from,
: because I also think this is an important
: consideration when deciding where to move in
: Ireland. I lived in the DC area for many
: years, and I 'needed' to move in the
: vicinity of Dublin.

: I have dual citizenship, post 50's when I
: made
: the move eight years ago and have never
: regreted it; but-- except for a few months
: for travelling, I've been constantly
: employed (thank goodness for computer
: skills). I do stand a good chance of my
: company closing down after the first of the
: year--and I'll say that there is only a very
: minor chance of my finding another job--age
: and gender (female) don't help. Re
: legal/government jobs--the laws are
: different--wouldn't be deemed as an easy
: transition. Also, Scott is right on
: regarding how much it costs to maintain
: one's self, and this would be with a rent of
: 700 euro or less--of course you can share
: and live in a small town--but then sharing
: may be difficult. --and even if you have
: 'backup' money from America, remember the
: exchange rate is around 1.46 now, so the
: dollar doesn't go far. But then again, we
: only live once, so live like there's no
: tomorrow.

: Well Denise, thank you. You'll see I read
: and
: answered Scott's first, but yest, I would
: have thought a good bit less I could live
: on. I'd love to know more about your story,
: where you're going, if you think you'll
: work, buy etc. There are very few people
: standing in line to go off to Leitrim! If
: you'd like, drop me a line at
: pattyoshea@comcast.net. Thanks.

: Patricia - I leave for Ireland next week
: with
: the intent of starting a new life in
: Leitrim. We have a similar profile. I do
: know that it is very difficult to "get
: a job" there however it is perfectly OK
: to be self-employed. This works for me plus
: I have a tiny pension. Leitrim is very
: affordable - have you looked at www.daft.ie
: for an idea of rents? It is a bit of a
: process relocating but can be done. Everyone
: seems to have different stories about how
: they did it. I suggest you rent for 6 months
: and see how you like it before fully
: committing to buying a home.
: Maybe we will see each other!

: Hello fellow Ireland dreamers, and those
: already there.
: Here's my question; I'm well aware of the
: economy in Ireland, jobs situation etc. I am
: 50ish, single (div'd, kids on their own),
: have lots of 1st cousins in Leitrim, would
: love to go. Is this a workable idea if I
: figure I give myself 2 yrs. worth of savings
: to live on - will have to calculate what
: that is - until I may for sure get myself a
: little job. I'm thinking that as to buying a
: small home, the next year or two would
: actually be a good time. Are there any other
: brave folks out there (over the 20's) who
: did this on their own? Would love to hear
: how it went. Thanks, Patricia
