Well Scott, I like it that you tell it like it is.
Yes, we like in a world where 51 might be considered old! And we know that wouldn't be said; they don't get a look at you so they don't know you look 40. As to skills, I have no problems here, I a am college educated paralegal, 5 yrs. at Kraft in Intellectual property, the last 5 yrs. at HSBC in financial litigation. I am SWAMPED with work! And I can't get a transfer to HSBC Ireland because 'the Irish aren't taking any app.s from anyone outside HSBC Ireland'. So, there you have it. I might get a job with a law firm say in Sligo or Eniskillen, maybe even Carrick but there is no bet. And wow, that's a lot of money! I may hold off on quitting my job....Oh, and yes, I'm the one going for citizenship based on Mom's birth. Thank you! (The cousins think I"m mad!!! There's now work to be had)

: You don't mention whether you qualify for
: Irish citizenship. If you are not a citizen,
: then it will be very, very, very hard to get
: a job. Basically impossible unless you have
: very high end skills (you didn't mention
: them either).
:
: You simply won't get a work permit or green
: card these days or the job offer to start
: the process without medical, engineering,
: programming, etc. experience.
:
: If you are a citizen and don't need to apply
: for a work permit or green card, then it
: will be merely very, very hard. Again, your
: skill set is crucial. We're in a deep
: recession, 12pc unemployment and that is NOT
: going to be totally cured in a mere two
: years.
:
: Figure 50,000 - 70,000 Euro for two years.
: You can do it for less if you just take a
: room in a shared house, no car.
:
: Ask your cousins their advice. Leitrim
: prices are lower than Dublin and prices for
: everything but doctors and lawyers are still
: going down.
:
: This society also has definite age
: discrimination when hiring choices are made.
: Again, your background may overcome that
: hurdle.
:
: But, the key is the citizenship. Without it,
: for the next two years till things pick up
: substantially, you simply won't get through
: the government weeding process without those
: high end skills.
:
: Good luck. At least you're planning properly
: and that counts for a lot.

: Hello fellow Ireland dreamers, and those
: already there.
: Here's my question; I'm well aware of the
: economy in Ireland, jobs situation etc. I am
: 50ish, single (div'd, kids on their own),
: have lots of 1st cousins in Leitrim, would
: love to go. Is this a workable idea if I
: figure I give myself 2 yrs. worth of savings
: to live on - will have to calculate what
: that is - until I may for sure get myself a
: little job. I'm thinking that as to buying a
: small home, the next year or two would
: actually be a good time. Are there any other
: brave folks out there (over the 20's) who
: did this on their own? Would love to hear
: how it went. Thanks, Patricia
