citizenship and passport with an irish born parent

Hi all. I've just started reading and investigating and I"m a bit confused; if I want to get my citizenship (Mom born in Leitrim), and I manage to get her long birth cert. and parents marriage cert., send along with passport app., does the passport act as my 'proof of citizenship'? Or is there something else I apply for, that being 'citizenship' first. Everything I read says that I AM a citizen already given mom's birth, so perhaps I only need the passport. If anyone knows, has had the same situation I appreciate clarification. I want to move to Ireland sometime in the next few years, sell home here first, rent there for awhile (with enough funds saved to hold off without/until I get a job). But I'm not clear on what documents I need. Thanks!
