Hi everyone, I've just finished reading the five pages of threads on here and would like to run my current situation by you all for your opinion.
I currently live in Phoenix, Arizona, and I've been in the IT industry for 9+ years now.
I've read plenty lately about the state of unemployment in Ireland, and can say that things around here aren't far off from that.
I've recently left a position managing a programming team (where I did programming and database stuff in addition to the managing).
I've always wanted to go to Ireland, and am thinking about making a strong effort to relocate.
1. Can anyone point me towards an IT or programming related forum for IT professionals in Dublin? I'm interested in learning what differences and similarities there might be to the work in the US.
2. All the positions that I'm currently looking at advertise around 60k and go up from there, so reading the new greencard info, it appears that I might not have as much trouble getting one as other professions, is this correct?
3. My girlfriend is a flight attendant and flies to Europe from the US frequently. She would have an address in the US for tax purposes, but ideally we'd like to live in Ireland together. That being said, she's out flying every other week. Can anyone help me understand how or if there would be any problem of her coming into Ireland every other week? Also, I noticed there is a process for dependents of greencard holders. Does anyone know what the definition of a dependent is? If she only wants to live in Ireland with me, does she need anything at all?
4. I've read that the best luck at finding a job would be to actually be in Ireland. What are your thoughts on agressively pursuing jobs in Ireland via phone? Here in the US, when looking for a position I get a list of recruiters and keep running thru the list until I find something. Would the same work in Ireland? I wouldn't mind doing phone interviews first and then flying over for an inperson. For those of you that flew over to interview, how did you make sure you lined up enough interviews to make flying over worthwhile?
Thanks!
-Don
