I have been reading up on the new rules for returning home with my US citizen spouse. So it seems, yet again, Ireland desperately aspires to be the US and are trying to copy their immigration process for the spouse of an Irish national! I am having trouble with the whole process. Do we turn up at the airport with my husband, declare him to an IO and take it from there, or can we do all the applications for residency before we leave? As far as I can see, it can take up to 12 months to process while my husband won't be allowed to work unless he applies for a work permit. Is this correct? And again, is this something we can do before we leave? We will have savings, but the sooner my husband can work, the better.
Really Ireland should have thought of all this stuff long before now. Immigrants started coming into the country in large numbers long before I left...You'd think they could have sorted it out before now! Just makes me mad to see the recent events concerning immigrants and dole etc, and as usual, the irish nationals are going to suffer for it! Sorry for the rant!....
