The civil servants at the Dept. of Enterprise are merely responding to their political masters. And those are the same folks who dug us in so deep to this current mess.
They have no solutions other than bail out their buddies and the banks, so they're playing the old populist game of blaming immigrants. Newbies can't vote so our political masters can claim to be doing something, anything.

: Hi Folks, are there any news on LTR after 2
: years for Green Card holders?
: I'm very cross with DETE that confuses
: high-skilled migrants by publishing lies and
: broken promises on their official website.

: Thanks Scott. I guess that I'm not yet out
: of
: the woods. My Green Card "expires"
: in Feb 2010.
:
: I'll keep an eye on this site.

: The Dept. of Enterprise site has a page up
: that I never paid attention to before at
:
:
:
: You probably already know this. Here is
: where any changes are likely to be. As well
: as splashed prominently in the Irish Times.
:
: Some key paragraphs:
:
: It is intended that Green Card Employment
: Permit holders whose permit and immigration
: registration card (GNIB card) are due to
: expire in 2009 will not be required to apply
: for a renewal permit through the Department
: of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
:
: • Subject to parliamentary approval of the
: Immigration Residence and Protection Bill
: 2008, further details will be published in
: 2009 advising Green Card Permit holders or
: those who have re-registered per 1 above of
: how to apply under the new Act for long-term
: residency.

: I guess that I’ve dodged the bullet for now.
: My next concern is long term residency
: [LTR].
:
: I am in the 2nd year of my [2-year] green
: card. I have recently updated my passport
: and received a Stamp 1 that allows me
: residency for year 2. €150 please.
:
: My green card does not require renewal after
: 2 years [as of now], but I do need to have
: permission to maintain my residency after 2
: years.
:
: It was my understanding before I arrived in
: Ireland that long term residency [passport
: Stamp 4] was available to holders of Green
: Cards following the initial 2-year period.
:
: However, when I recently renewed my Stamp 1
: for a second year I was told to watch the
: official website for potential changes in
: LTR rules and that temporarily there were
: only issuing passport Stamp 1 to folks who’s
: Green Card had matured.
:
: Other than the hassle/expense of having to
: pay €150 every year for a Stamp 1 I would
: like to have a little faith that after 2
: years I wouldn’t have to watch the
: government play with the rules every year
: and wonder which year could be my last. I
: would like long term residency after 2
: years.
:
: If anyone has any info on what the proposed
: changes will be or knows which official
: website I should be monitoring, I would
: greatly appreciate the information.

: Very on the ball, Sandy. I had heard about
: it
: and was going to do the research today.
: Thanks!
:
: Like Jeffery, I noticed the family changes.
: But, they're also taking off the list whole
: huge categories of skilled workers earning
: less than 60,000 Euro that I thought would
: be safe from a hit - physiotherapists,
: speech and language therapists and financial
: experts like claims assessors.
:
: Hedge fund specialists are also hit. Do they
: even get out of bed without getting a 60,000
: Euro bonus? Boo hoo for them.
:
: I suppose like everything these days, the
: pigs at the top will do fine, but the young
: trainees on low salaries will take the hit.

: Lots of changes with work permits, biggest
: change seems to be the changes for spouses
: and children of work permit holders.

: I just heard a blurb on the radio about a
: change in Work Permit rules but didn't get
: any details. The official website is not
: reflecting any change.
:
: I didn't hear the phrase Green Card.
:
: Does any one have the lowdown?
