Hello,
This is a great site and just what I was looking for. I'm a US Citizen living in Boston. I have been dating an Irishman for the past six months (most of it long-distance unfortunately) and we are currently trying to figure out how to get in the same place. We're exploring lots of possibilities and I'm trying to do some research on what the opportunities might be for me in Ireland.
I know the timing of this is probably terrible considering the recession (although the drop in airfares has helped!) and the restrictions on Non-EU citizens, but I'd like to get a sense of the field of arts and culture in Ireland, particularly as it relates to fundraising. My background is in working for museums as a part of their fundraising departments. I currently manage the grant program for an art museum. I know that many of the major art institutions/museums are State funded but wonder if there is still a need for fundraising professionals whether in the arts & culture sector or more broadly. I would also be very interested in moving to the other side and working for a foundation or charity organization.
Does anyone have any info on this field, the prospects for getting a job (particularly whether a non-profit organization would be willing to go through the hassle of getting a work permit), or any other feedback?
I have been considering applying for a visa in the UK and moving over there rather than directly to Ireland. Any advice/thoughts on that option? Particularly as regards my professional background.
Also, as I know some contributors have come to the states and gone back, any advice for my boyfriend trying to get here? He's an engineer so is highly-skilled but it seems like it is just as challenging for an Irish citizen to get a work permit in the states. He's considering going back to school - which would be the easiest option - but is not keen on the debt and having to give up his job when he could go part-time there for free and still work.
Sorry for the long post. I appreciate your thoughts and comments.
Laura
