If you have door to door shipping, it's all taken care of by the shipping companies. You do NOT have to appear at the port during the customs inspection. In fact, there's no time table on such inspections, so you basically can't be there.
The inspectors pass on the paperwork to the office staff and you call them or they call you with news that you can pick up your stuff. The shipping company handles all that if you do door to door. It's the shipping company, in that case, that will call you to set up a time and place for delivery.

: Hey guys, I'm moving from LA to Ireland and
: have a few boxes (about 5, containing books,
: picture frames, clothes) weighing about
: 80lbs each that I'm shipping home. I'm going
: traveling for a few weeks between leaving LA
: and arriving in Ireland so won't be there
: when the boxes arrive. I've gotten a number
: of quotes from various companies in LA who
: will ship door to door, but am wondering
: about customs - do I have to 'clear' customs
: by doing something from here, or does
: someone at home have to 'meet' the boxes
: when they arrive etc?
:
: It's been almost eight years since I moved
: here (Pre 9/11), but I simply mailed several
: boxes over. I can't remember the exact
: details, but check into surface mail. I
: think it took about eight or nine weeks.
: There were restrictions as far as box size
: and weight--but they were still big boxes
: and it was certainly cheaper than other
: alternatives--plus, it would give you a bit
: of time.
