Thank you all for your helpful words of advice. I've just gotten off the telephone with the woman at the Irish consulate who told me that I would likely get my citizenship in about two months. After that she said I'd need to apply for an Irish passport if I wanted to stay in the country for more than 90 days. I'll have to apply for citizenship at the consulate, but I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge of how fast the other consulates operate when processing passport applications. Am I eligible to apply to any of the consulates? If so, does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks again,
John

: Thanks so much for you help, Scott and Lisa.
: I'll post back with an update as soon as I
: hear from them. I certainly don't want to
: wait for another gov. document to come in
: (the Irish passport) so I'll probably just
: try and go once I get my citizenship. What's
: the worst that would happen? I will be a
: citizen, after all.

: As I recall, you probably can enter once you
: have the paperwork in hand. You end up going
: to an immigration office to register, if I
: recall correctly.
:
: I called the Citizenship Office to confirm,
: but they only answer their phones on Tuesday
: and Thursday mornings. Contact details
: below.
:
: Sorry for the delay, I had NOT-SWINE-FLU but
: it may as well have been. You can try
: calling and getting the inside skinny
: yourself. Just remember the time
: differences.
:
: The recorded message said they're now
: processing applications from July 2006!!! I
: assume the speaker was dozy and meant 2009.
: Otherwise, you'll get your forms in 2012. I
: can assure you no one has reported such a
: lengthy turn-around time. 6-8 months is
: fairly usual, but it can take as long as a
: year. 13 months has happened, but that's an
: outlier and unusual.

: My only words of comfort,John..this is how
: just about everything in Ireland
: works..Think of it as gaining valuable
: experience and knowledge!
:
: I wouldn't recommend moving over though yet,
: until you have the passport. Good luck!

: Hi there. I've been working for about a year
: now to track down all the necessary
: documents to apply for Irish citizenship by
: decent (I'm a U.S.-born citizen). I first
: submitted my application to the Irish
: consulate in Chicago back in September 2008,
: but it was returned to me in November
: because my dad's birth certificate wasn't
: properly certified. I tracked down the
: proper certificate and mailed it off in
: early December. Since then, I've been
: eagerly awaiting my citizenship so I can
: move abroad. A few concerns I have:
:
: -The Irish consulate in Chicago won't
: confirm receipt of my application and said
: when I asked them on the phone "if you
: don't hear anything from us that's a good
: thing." They said it should take 6-8
: months to process. So now I'm waiting to
: receive it between May and July, but I'm
: worried because I haven't heard a word from
: them. Can someone tell me this is normal and
: I'll hear from them soon?
:
: -I want to move to Ireland as soon as I get
: my citizenship. Is there anything keeping me
: from doing this? I have an American
: passport, but no Irish passport (obviously,
: since I'm not yet a citizen). Can I move to
: Ireland with my citizenship but no passport?
:
: -What other things can I be doing right now
: to prepare for my move?
:
:
: Honestly, I feel quite stressed out about
: this since my life is essentially at a
: stand-still waiting for these papers. I'm
: not renewing my lease for my apartment here
: in the states, I've stopped looking for
: long-term jobs (currently surviving on a
: temp. job), I'm putting it all on the line
: for a move to Ireland, but I haven't heard a
: word from them yet. Does anyone have some
: words of advice or comfort?
:
: Thank you,
:
: John
