Two thoughts. One, check out http://removals-ireland.ie/ which is a site that compares removal company quotations.
Second, it looks like your friend needs to be able to rent a truck. Most of the truck rental sites I've checked out rent normal trucks where what you need is the flat bed kind of truck to transport containers. I'm not sure what those are called.
If you do, how about a web search for rentals of such flat bed trucks.

: Hey, THANKS, for the reply...
: Yeah, I hear you on the truck and the roads
: - not to mention the walls on either side.
:
: To clarify a bit - my husband grew up here
: so we aren't completely falling into it. We
: packed the container ourselves and my
: husband trucked the stuff to the port on the
: US side so we do know what we are getting
: into unpacking it. We do not know what we
: are getting into trying to find the right
: people/agents/companies here which was why
: we were trying to do port to door and avoid
: this whole scene. For us the few miles on
: this side is way more hectic than the couple
: hundred on the other. We have a lot of
: family/friends but no one familiar with
: shipping or those kinds of contacts. We had
: a lot in the US plus a lot of experience
: with shipping through our work and that went
: pretty smooth.
:
: I do have a friend that was a trucker (in
: the EU but not Ireland) before changing
: professions - still has his license, knows
: the whole loading/unloading/crane etc
: process and is willing to drive but doesn't
: know the right people here.
:
: Anyone??
