Well, for sure, you don't want to handle it yourself. You'd be talking about driving the biggest vehicle possible on Ireland's donkey cart lanes. Unless you have plenty of experience driving fat donkeys through narrow gateways, you want an expert.
Second, there's the matter of insurance and bonding if something does go wrong. You've got it this far. My advice is to hire a pro for the last bit.
Finally, unless you and your significant other are used to hefting dozens and dozens of weighty boxes and furniture around and have neighbours who don't mind a vast container taking up their street for many, many hours, then here too you're well advised to pay the money and rely on the pro's.
If you have loads of family and friends over here, and have available a couple of hand carts, then and only then should you consider unpacking yourselves. And, who pays the bill if your brother-in-law gets a hernia?

: Well, we did it. Moved to Ireland that is.
: We are here and our container arrives in 3-4
: weeks. It is being shipped port to port so
: as far as we understand it we need to hire
: our own customs agent and figure out how to
: unload it. Now we are totally fine with
: unloading the container ourselves but not
: sure how to go about it. Would it be
: cheaper to hire a company to get the
: container from the shipyard and go unload it
: there or try to hire a truck to haul the
: container? (We have a friend with a
: commercial truck driver's license.) Any
: ideas? contacts?
: THANKS!
:
: BTW we had thought it was port to door when
: we hired...then at the last our terms were
: "clarified" and we're scrambling a
: bit!
